Still Unsigned? Why Senior Year Isn’t the End

May 17, 20266 min read

Every year, thousands of talented high school football players reach their senior season without a single college football offer. No scholarship. No official visits. No phone calls from coaches. Just silence.

And every year, those same players — and their parents — ask the same desperate question: Is it too late?

I know that feeling personally. And my answer, backed by lived experience, is this: No. It is not too late. But you have to act now, and you have to act smart.

My Story: One Year of High School Football. Two Power Five Conferences.

I only played one year of high school football.

Let that sink in. One year. No four-year varsity career. No major recruiting profile. No ESPN ranking. Just one year of film, one window of opportunity, and one decision to bet on myself.

Despite being considered under-recruited and inexperienced, I earned a late scholarship opportunity to play college football at Virginia Tech — under Hall of Fame head coach Frank Beamer, one of the most legendary names in the history of the sport.

Not only did I make the roster — I started as a true freshman in the ACC. That is an accomplishment fewer than a handful of college football players ever achieve, regardless of how long they played in high school.

But I wasn't done.

After completing my undergraduate degree in just three years while simultaneously serving in the Corps of Cadets and participating in Army ROTC, I transferred to Texas A&M University as a graduate transfer — where I competed in the SEC under head coach Kevin Sumlin alongside future NFL stars including Myles Garrett and some of the most elite football talent in the country.

I scored touchdowns in both the ACC and the SEC.

After playing one year of high school football.

I am not telling you this to impress you. I am telling you this because I need you to understand — with full certainty — that the college football recruiting process does not end when signing day passes. It ends when you stop competing for your opportunity.

The Truth About Being an Unsigned Senior in College Football Recruiting

Here is what most families don't realize about the college football recruiting process: coaches are still looking for players after National Signing Day.

Rosters change. Players transfer. Injuries happen. Academic casualties open spots. Coaches who didn't fill every position in February are actively searching for unsigned seniors well into the spring and summer.

The question is not whether opportunities exist. The question is whether you are positioned to be found.

Being an unsigned senior in college football does not mean you lack talent. In most cases, it means one or more of the following:

  • Your football highlight tape is not working for you. College coaches make decisions in the first 30–60 seconds of watching film. If your highlight tape does not lead with your best plays, present you in a clear position, and show coaches exactly what they need to see — it is not doing its job.

  • You are not proactively reaching out to coaches. The college football recruiting process at the D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO level is largely driven by athletes who initiate contact. Coaches at these levels do not have the same recruiting budgets as Power Five programs. They are waiting to hear from you.

  • Your recruiting profile is incomplete or invisible. If a coach searches for you and finds nothing — no film, no stats, no academic information — you do not exist in their mind as a prospect.

  • You are only targeting programs that are not a realistic fit. Many unsigned seniors are still holding out for D1 offers when D2, NAIA, or JUCO programs would love to have them on campus tomorrow.

What Unsigned Senior Football Players Should Do Right Now

1. Get a Professional Football Highlight Tape Produced Immediately

This is the single most important thing an unsigned senior can do. Not just any highlight tape — a professional, coach-targeted football highlight tape that leads with your best plays, clearly identifies your position, and is formatted the way college coaches actually want to watch film.

At Full Ride University, football highlight tape production is our highest-volume service for a reason: it works. We know what college coaches are looking for on film at every level — D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO — and we build your highlight tape around that knowledge. This is not a highlight reel for Instagram. This is a recruiting tool designed to get you scholarship opportunities.

2. Expand Your Target List Beyond D1

One of the biggest mistakes unsigned senior football players make is tunnel vision on Division I programs. The reality is that D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO football programs offer real scholarship money, real playing time, and real pathways to professional football for athletes who are the right fit.

JUCO football in particular is one of the most underutilized stepping stones in the college football recruiting process. Players who go the JUCO route, perform well, and build their film can earn D1 offers as transfers. It is a longer road — but it is a real road.

3. Start Sending Film and Emails to Coaches Today

Do not wait. Do not overthink it. Identify 20–30 programs where you are a realistic fit, find the position coach or recruiting coordinator's email address, and send a professional recruiting email with your highlight tape link, your academic information, and a clear expression of interest.

Coaches respect athletes who take initiative. Being an unsigned senior who proactively reaches out with a polished highlight tape and a professional message stands out in a crowded inbox.

4. Attend an Unsigned Senior Showcase

Unsigned senior football showcases are events specifically designed to connect players who still need opportunities with college coaches who still have roster spots. They happen throughout the spring and into the summer.

These events are valuable not just for the exposure — but for the reps, the feedback, and the chance to compete in front of coaches who are there with a specific mission: to sign players.

5. Get Expert Support Early — Don't Wait Until It's Too Late

The biggest mistake I see families make is waiting too long. They wait to see how senior year goes. They wait for offers that never come. They wait until spring and realize the window is closing fast.

The families who succeed in the college football recruiting process — at every level — are the ones who start early, stay proactive, and invest in the right support system.

That is exactly why I built Full Ride University. I lived the experience of being an under-recruited athlete who found a way through — and I have dedicated my career to making sure other players and families do not have to figure it out alone.

The Bottom Line for Unsigned Senior Football Players

If you are a high school senior without a college football offer right now, the worst thing you can do is nothing.

The best thing you can do is get your film right, expand your target list, reach out to coaches directly, and get support from people who understand the college football recruiting process at every level.

I played one year of high school football and scored touchdowns in two of the most competitive conferences in college football history. Your path does not have to look like anyone else's path. But it has to be a path you are actively building.

Full Ride University is here to help you build it.
